anti aging serums - as well as or instead of moisturiser?

I tried an anti aging serum (E Lauder) recently which left my skin very smooth but apparently it needs to be used under moisturiser. Is this really necessary and if so, why? Seems a bit like overkil!

Has any one tried that Chella anti-aging serum and does it really work?

Is there an side effect to be aware of? I don't want to try it and be wrinkle free but end up with a third eyeball.....

How can I make a anti aging serum at home with essential oil and not clog my pores?

After I put this on do I rinse or wash it off. I want all natural ingredient. Also where are some good essential oil websites where I can buy cheap, but also is made of good quality?
